"love in the time of corona" - willow and vine charcoal on 18x24 strathmore artists statementFor my final project, this drawing comprises the last year and uses symbolism to describe emotions, and events that stand out to me looking back. The last brought just as much to me as it took away, and to me it is laid out in this drawing. I was influenced by the charcoal work of many portrait artists such as Louis Smith, and the surreal work of watercolor artist Michelle Konczyk. My emotions drove the symbolism, and heavily decided what I would highlight from the year. The items in the “frame” of this drawing all have a meaning, as does the focal point of the image- the family portrait. Using willow and compressed charcoal gave me the ability to give this drawing a lot of softness which is contrasted by the heavily lined frame. The bee and flowers in this image represent the amazing opportunities I have had to start my bee research again this year, and the peace I have felt being able to get back outside alone in the woods. The flowers are also spring ephemerals, symbolizing my re-blooming into the world with spring and my research. On the bottom, my crying eye is representative of all of the pain I have felt through the year, loosing friends, and going through many emotions. The focal point of my year, and centerpiece of this drawing is my newly formed family. Being able to move in with my long time boyfriend and adopt a cat has been the highlight of this year and brought me so much joy—which I hope is illustrated in this image. progress photos and inspiration

"shaking a treat bag" - willow and compressed charcoal on 18x24 Strathmore This is my cat Ivy, and she is really an amazing companion. These are still life captures of her throughout a couple days-- to me together they have a narrative of Ivy's reaction and moods to hearing me open a can of wet cat food-- of shaking a bag of cat treats.
"windy day" - willow and compressed charcoal on 18x24 paper process photosphotos throughout the process of completing this self portrait, including reference image. inspiration and sketchesAdditive Drawing of Draped ClothI started with the additive drawing for this assignment. It was pretty challenging, but I ended up being happy with my end result. Subtractive Drawing of Draped ClothI realized as I was working on this drawing, that I had draped some more difficult fold in the fabric to draw. I am proud of some of the variation of shades in this image.
For this part of assignment 1 I wanted to use a window in the background to challenge myself and have an interesting composition. The photo of what I was looking at does not completely line up with what I saw when I was standing doing this assignment.
exercises: 15 sec to 10 minFrom my 1min drawing to my 10min, I think I improved the most on putting my objects in the correct layout and getting the size of my objects in relation to the space and each other more correct. This was pretty difficult for me, and i found myself forgetting to use some of the techniques like creating a grid or using the clock-angle technique. By my 10 min drawing I think I was more calm and less panicky about getting the images on the page. I think my 8 or 9 min drawing are my strongest because I was focusing on layout, and they were pretty accurate to what I was seeing. |
